Capital District Gaming - Yahoo! Group - Helping Capital District Adventure Gamers to Communicate

Last Update:  July 6, 2010

The Capital District Gaming Yahoo! Group

Original Email Announcement

Hello Adventure Gamers,

A big part of the Schenectady Wargamers Association's purpose is to help facilitate adventure gaming throughout the Capital District.

We've been doing this for years with our web site and our email newsletter, SWANews.  We are now expanding our efforts to help Capital District gamers communicate by setting up an open Yahoo group, "Capital District Gaming"  ( http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/cdgaming/ ).

Over the course of the next week or so (we're limited to 50 per day), we will be inviting each of you to join the group via an email from Yahoo! Groups.

Capital District Gaming is an open* game discussion forum which includes individual gaming enthusiasts (like you) as well as members of various game groups in Southern Vermont, Western Massachusetts and Eastern New York. The "Capital District Gaming" list is aimed at discussing games of all types and genres with the emphasis on face-to-face gaming.  It also serves as a meeting place to find open game events where you can play and allows local gamers to communicate.

Resources provided via the list include:

+  Links to Game Stores within a two-hour radius of Albany, NY;
+  Links to Game Conventions throughout the Northeast;
+  and, an open Event Calendar listing Store and Group based gaming events within a two-hour radius of Albany, NY.

Capital District Gaming is an open resource that is intended to be used and updated by the whole gaming community.
Are we missing a store?  You can add a Link.
Are you running a game and need players?  You can send a message to the list, or you can add an event to the Calendar.

The three major game retailers in the extended Capital District are already using this new Yahoo group to publicize the events at their stores.  We invite you and your gaming group to do the same.

Capital District Gaming is not a replacement for the one-way SWA News announcement email list. Capital District Gaming is an open* forum for the community as a whole to communicate and facilitate gaming in the broader community. We are putting forth the effort to make this social space happen, but the activities publicized on Capital District Gaming are by no means limited to SWA sanctioned events.

Please watch your email box over the next few days.  Yahoo allows us to send only 50 invitations per day, so it will take several days to invite everyone.

If you have any questions, please reply to this email and we'll get back to you promptly.

[* While Capital District Gaming is an "open" forum, new members to the list have their posts held for moderation until we can confirm that they are not a spammer.  Messages from proven, trusted members will post without moderation.]

Introduction and Goals

(This material is sent to all new subscribers of the Capital District Gaming Yahoo Group)

Welcome to Capital District Gaming!

We are an open adventure gaming discussion forum which includes individual gamer enthusiasts as well as members of various game groups in Southern Vermont, Western Massachusetts and Eastern New York. The "Capital District Gaming" list is aimed at discussing games of all types and genres with the emphasis on face-to-face gaming.  It also serves as a meeting place to find open game events where you can play and allows local gamers to keep in touch with each other.

This list is not a formal game group and joining the list does not make you a member of a formal organization. Capital District Gaming is more of a forum and resource which serves a pool of interested gamers in the area. The Capital District Gaming forum is coordinated through a free Yahoo Groups mailing list. If you wish to form a game get-together, you can ask for recruits using the list. Several open game events now take place around the area - see the calendar section for these:

This list is moderated.  We regret that spammers are so common and active, but that's one of the annoyances of an open internet. Initial posts by new members are approved before posting. Once it is determined that you are a gamer, your membership will be altered to allow free and open posting. However, should a discussion get badly off topic or out of hand, we reserve the right to moderate posts or even suspend or ban members. The intention is to keep the forum focused on gaming in the extended Capital District.

This list should be a resource - to keep interested people in the area informed of the various open gaming efforts and to discuss gaming in general. Please be aware that the Capital District Gaming list, if successful, may generate quite a bit of email traffic. You can switch to Digest mode (where you only receive 1 or 2 emails containing a digest of the posts for each day) or can view by Web browser.

These options can be set at the http://games.groups.yahoo.com/group/cdgaming website.

If this will be a problem for you, you can always UNSUBSCRIBE by sending an email to cdgaming-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com

Enjoy the list!

List and Group Etiquette

This is an auto-post... Please read carefully so that the Capital District Gaming list is a more efficient place for both posters and readers.

1. When posting to the Capital District Gaming list, try to keep your subject lines in tune with the content of your message.  If you reply to one email but the subject starts to drift, please feel free to change the subject line to reflect the new topic.  This makes it much easier for those reading to filter on the subjects that interest them most.

2. When posting to the Capital District Gaming list, try to cut down on the unnecessary quoted text (text from the person you are replying to).  This is especially true of the boiler-plate Capital District Gaming and Yahoo! material that is appended to every posted message.  It's hard to read these messages with lots of extra quoted text - especially in digest mode.

3. If the number of messages is getting to you (!!), feel free to go into digest mode where you receive one message a couple times each day containing a digest of all posts.  You get the same information, but slightly delayed.  There is also web-based browsing of the group where you can read the messages online (and get no emails). If you decided to stay in email mode, be aware that most good email clients allow you to filter your incoming messages and file them away in a folder different from your "inbox".  You can easily search on the word "[CDGaming]" which appears in every message from the list and use that to trigger storing your messages in a convenient folder for later viewing.

4. To help people filter on content that is most appropriate for them, please use the following tags in your subject lines (the braces should be included to make the tag stand-out for filtering):

[OT] - For posts which are off topic.
[SA] - For Session Announcements (the auto-poster uses "Reminder from the Calendar of cdgaming" as the first line).
[SR] - For Session Reports and games played during local Sessions.
[GR] - For Game Reviews.
[META] - for discussions on or about the UG list.

Posts without a tag will be for general game-related discussions, asking about sessions, discussions of Conventions, etc. If you miss using a tag, don't follow up the post with an apology - just let it slide and hopefully anyone responding will add a tag if needed. Again, most general discussion can go tag-less. This will go a long way to allowing people to filter on the Capital District Gaming content.  Remember, all Capital District Gaming posts will have the "[CDGaming]" tag automatically applied so these additional tags are used to filter and sort within Capital District Gaming content.

5. We do allow occasional game-related for-sale or for-trade messages as well. These should be only for personal trade/sell game-related items and should not be too frequent - do not flood the list with personal sales emails.  If you have more than one item for sale/trade, consider posting them together in a single discrete email.  Do not conduct your sales on the Capital District Gaming list - after the initial post please keep all excahnges/haggles off-list in private email.  Basically, a good use of this is when someone wants to clean out thier closet and sell/trade games to local friends to save on shipping, hassle, etc.  Mentioning bargains found at a store you have no affiliation with is fine (and encouraged!).  We currently do not allow any auctions on this forum (either direct auctions or links to auctions at another site like ebay) and we do not allow posts from commercial sources (stores or other related parties).

Taking the time to read and understand these steps will make reading the Capital District Gaming list more enjoyable for everyone.  Thanks!
