Board Game Geek's Top 25 at Council of Five Nations

Board Game Geek's "Top 35" Event Track

Last Update:  Sunday, September 16, 2012

We’ve gone out of our way to recruit GMs for the most popular games.  The Board Game Geek ranking is one good way for us to gauge that, and we’re well represented.  BGG favorites all weekend long!

Friday Afternoon  2:00-6:00 PM  (Slot A)

A Game of Thrones * A Game of Thrones Boardgame 2nd Edition
A-Board-4 * $ 2
Game Master: Rob Rodger * 6 Players * Teen14
King Robert Baratheon is dead, and the lands of Westeros brace for battle.

In the second edition of A Game of Thrones: The Board Game, three to six players take on the roles of the great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros, as they vie for control of the Iron Throne through the use of diplomacy and warfare. Based on the best-selling A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels by George R.R. Martin, A Game of Thrones is an epic board game in which it will take more than military might to win. Will you take power through force, use honeyed words to coerce your way onto the throne, or rally the townsfolk to your side? Through strategic planning, masterful diplomacy, and clever card play, spread your influence over Westeros! Beginners encouraged.

Friday Night  7:00-11:00+ PM  (Slot B)

Agricola
B-Board-1 * $ 2
Game Master: Amanda Rofe * 5 Players * Teen14
Agricola is the Latin word meaning "farmer" and that's exactly the role you will take on in this game. You and your husband (or you and your wife, depending on your situation) start out in a two room wooden hut. After that, it's up to you to go out and plow your fields, plant wheat and/or vegetables, put up fences for pastures, collect livestock, and possibly have some kids to help with the labour (hint: that's a good idea). The number one goal, however, is to make sure you can feed the people. At the end of the game, if you've built a better farm than your opponents, you will have won the farming!

This game will be played using the E-Deck only, barring unanimous agreement from all of the players. Rules will be taught; beginners encouraged. Beginners encouraged.

Through the Ages
B-Board-6 * $ 2
Game Master: Mike Russman * 8 Players * Teen14
Through the Ages is a civilization building game. The goal is to develop your civilization, not to destroy other ones. Military strength is just one aspect of your nation, as well as population, production or science. It is up to you which aspect you will concentrate on, more or less, but you should not underestimate any of them while building your civilization.

Victory is achieved by the player whose nation produces the most culture during the game. However, there are many ways to produce culture: through religion, literature or drama, by building wonders, by utilizing cultural persons, etc. Considerable amount of culture can be gained even via wars or #aggression. Beginners encouraged. Beginners encouraged.

Twilight Imperium
B-Board-7 * $ 2
Game Master: Stephen Kent * 6 Players * Teen14
Twilight Imperium Third Edition is an epic empire-building game of interstellar conflict, trade, and struggle for power. Players take the roles of ancient galactic civilizations, each seeking to seize the imperial throne via warfare, diplomacy, and technological progression. With geomorphic board tiles, exquisite plastic miniatures, hundreds of cards, and introducing a rich set of strategic dimensions that allows each player to refocus their game-plan. The strategic game-play borrows the governing element from 'Puerto Rico' to involve players in an iteratively complex and yet fast-paced game experience with very little downtime. The game map, basic player progress and overall victory are dynamically determined in almost exactly the same way as they are by imaginative players of 'Settlers of Catan', while the "Command" system cleverly improves on the 'oil' logistical mechanism of 'Attack' to both manage turn-based activity and limit the size of armies, uniquely enabling# weakened players to bounce back if they play their cards right.

PLEASE NOTE: Players should be aware that this is a long game and can be expected to go past 11 PM. Some knowledge of this rules system preferred.

A Lot of Power on Tiny Island * Power Grid - Japan
B-Board-10 * $ 2
Game Master: Brad Morgan * 6 Players * E10
The object of Power Grid is to supply the most cities with power when someone's network gains a predetermined size. In this new edition, players mark pre-existing routes between cities for connection, and then bid against each other to purchase the power plants that they use to power their cities.

However, as plants are purchased, newer, more efficient plants become available, so by merely purchasing, you're potentially allowing others access to superior equipment.

Additionally, players must acquire the raw materials (coal, oil, garbage, and uranium) needed to power said plants (except for the 'renewable' windfarm/ solar plants, which require no fuel), making it a constant struggle to upgrade your plants for maximum efficiency while still retaining enough wealth to quickly expand your network to get the cheapest routes.

Japan Variant - Based on the crowded geographical surroundings, the players can start two separate networks in Japan. The first connections are restricted to certain cities, guaranteeing a tough fight for the best networks. Beginners encouraged.

Le Havre
C-Board-7 * $ 2
Game Master: James Wilhelm * 10 Players * Teen14
Le Havre is a worker placement game that takes place in the French harbor city of...Le Havre. Players utilize buildings via their workers in order to generate resources or upgrade their resources. These resources can then be sold or used to build additional buildings, which are worth points. Your workers will require food, however, so at the end of every turn, they must be fed and the amount they consume increases steadily over the course of the game. Ships also play a big part of this game as they defray the food cost of your workers and enable the sale of your resources. Rules will be taught; beginners encouraged. Beginners encouraged.

Puerto Rico
C-Board-9 * $ 2
Game Master: Jessica Kent * 5 Players * Teen14

The game system lets players choose the order of the phases in each turn by allowing each player to choose a role from those remaining when it is their turn. War of the Ring is an epic board game that allows the players to simulate the events of the Lord of the Rings on a strategic level. The armies of shadow win by conquering those who oppose the rule of Sauron, and the armies of the free peoples win by either achieving a military victory on the field, or by holding out long enough for the ring bearer to complete his quest.

We will be using the Multiplayer variant which will split each side of the war into cooperative factions. New Players will benefit from reading the rule book ahead of time. Beginners encouraged.

On a turn, you get to take only two actions, one for you and one for the spouse, from all the possibilities you'll find on a farm: collecting clay, wood, or stone; building fences; and so on. You might think about having kids in order to get more work accomplished, but first you need to expand your house. And what are you going to feed all the little rugrats? I have pimped out my copy with wooden pieces that are a very cool addition to the game. I also have the expansion, Farmers of the Moor, that we can use if we play with only experienced players.
