Star Fleet Battles is an intricate game of ship-to-ship combat in the classic Star Trek universe (the one Kirk explored). Several other races have been added for variety. Tournament battles are like tense chess matches, with each player trying to bring his ship’s strengths to bear. Last year’s tournament was once again the largest in the whole country, and we expect great attendance again this year.

To make it easier for you to try the game if you're interested, look in your registration packet for a coupon to play the first game free. If you'd like to continue in the tournament, you can pay to enter. But if you'd just like to learn a new game, it's on us.

SFB stars right at 9am on Friday when the doors open. Fight patrol battles all weekend, until we start the finals on Saturday evening at 7pm. Semi-finals and Finals will be Sunday.

You can change your ship mid-tournament, but you will need to pay a new $5 to re-enter.

NEW FOR 2014 - Anyone who comes in try SFB for the first time, or comes in to shake off years of rust, can walk away with a free item from our “Take One Leave One” used SFB game pile. Beginners encouraged.

Federation Commander is the fast moving Miniatures game of starship combat in the Star Fleet Universe. Much effort has gone into streamlining the game - there are 8 impulses rather than 32. One die roll allocates up to 10 points of damage, rather than 2 dice per damage point that strikes the ship. Color coded charts and ship cards reduce the mental overhead of remembering what goes where. Gone is the tax form of energy allocation, replaced by a free flowing dynamic ""on the fly"" power allocation system. Maneuver has had countless special cases removed and streamlined. Die Another Day * Squadron Strike
B-Minis-3 * $ 2
Game Master: Ken Burnside * 6 Players * E10
Captain Jameston Church, of the League Space Vessel Enterprise didn't set out to be a hero. He and Commander Jeffries of the Intrepid had been garrisoning the Kronos star system, and waiting for their survey pickets to return from Cochrane.

Protocol says to send destroyers back to report that something might have gone missing, and to proceed forward, ready for conflict or diplomacy.

Much to his dismay, he found a massed fleet of Karthians. Diplomacy wouldn't happen in this life. If what the xeno team said about the Karthian's belief system was true, it was unlikely to happen in the next thousand, either. Based on how the Karthians were moving, they weren't aware of the entry wormhole to this system that the League had found. Retreating would reveal a way back into the League's main defensive positions.

He ordered the Intrepid to form up. While the odds were long, he, and Commander Jeffries needed to die another day. Beginners encouraged.

A brutal storm is lashing land and sea. The race against the storm is rapidly becoming a disaster and the need to seek shelter is plain. Once the storm abates the roads will be not be navigable for some time. Board Games

The Sword of Rome: Conquest of Italy, 362-272 BC * The Sword of Rome
C-Board-1 * $ 2
Game Master: Steve Bachman * 4 Players * Teen14
"Rome wasn't built in a day, nor was Italy conquered in a decade. Sword of Rome begins at a time when several factions - including a Roman Republic still in it's infancy - struggled for control of the Italian peninsula, domination of the western Mediterranean, and the right to vie for control of the known world. Each of these factions used their strengths to benefit their cause, whether it was the Greeks with their leaders and navies, the Gauls with their mobility and barbarism, the Etrucsans with their wealth, the Samnites with their innate knowledge of the area, or the Romans with their ability to recruit reinforcements to the colonies they build. Battles were quick and often brutal, and the populace was easily swayed by battlefield successes. Using a card-driven system for the gameboard action, with each player using their own unique deck of cards utilizing their power's particular strengths, 100 years of history is played out until either a player is able to exert dominance over the region or 9 turns have been played. Can you utilize your siege craft, war elephants, local tribes, or improved tactics to cause your opponents to be forgotten with the sands of time? Familiarization with card-driven games is helpful. Living Rules v1.3 (with slight changes from the original rules) can be downloaded at the publisher's (GMT) website below." Beginners encouraged.

Moon Shot at Council of Five Nations adventure gaming conventionMoon Shot
C-Board-2 * $ 2
Game Master: David Bostwick * 6 Players * E10
Largely an artifact of the Cold War, the Great Space Race started with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and ended with the first steps of human beings on the moon in 1969. The world was captivated by the exploration of space and the grand adventure that a few humans had embarked on. The Moon Shot became the defining event of a generation.

The game Moon Shot captures the essence of the most dramatic adventure of the 20th Century. Players will manage the efforts of their space agency to develop the technologies and knowledge necessary to make the great voyage to the moon possible. The objective is to achieve the greatest stature of all competing space agencies. Players will earn stature by planning and successfully completing missions, with greater stature awarded to those who are first to achieve each milestone.

This is a playtest of a game being developed by James DuMond. James has been a gamer since his high school days in the mid '80s playing a variety of RPGs, Boardgames and Miniature Wargames. James is designing Moon Shot to create a streamlined game about the American vs Soviet space race, but expanded to a multiplayer format by the addition of anachronistic space agencies while remaining as historical as possible. The game also aims to be subtlety educational by making players more aware of the historical milestones that were achieved in the early days of space exploration. James' ambition for Moonshot is to get it published and then sold at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum and the JFK Presidential Library so it is accessible to the public at-large. Beginners encouraged.

Lifeboats
C-Board-9 * $ 2
Game Master: Ben Maggi * 6 Players * Teen14
"What could be worse than to have your ship sink in the middle of a great storm, taking all food and supplies with it? How about being stuck on a bunch of flimsy life boats that seem to take on water leaks at an overwhelming rate? Or being surrounded by other crew members who only seem to care about them and not you? Or that crazy guy in the back who is suffering from heat stroke and wants everyone to call him Captain? And let’s not talk about the fear of your own boat sinking which constantly causes you to jump into someone else’s. In this game, you must struggle to have your sailors and officers survive long enough to reach the safety of some distant islands, but to do so will require strong diplomatic skills because everything in this game is done by voting! This is a pure negotiations game with little luck involved. Games usually take about three hours, but if the players are quick we might be able to get two games in." Beginners encouraged.

Assault on Grand Union Iron Works * Classic Battletech
D-Minis-1 * $ 2
Game Master: Andy Roy & Chris Nichols * 10 Players * Teen14
Following the Capellan Confederation’s invasion of Tikonov, the Federated Commonwealth found its forces on the planet in disarray. FedCom was blindsided by the Cappellan’s betrayal, and were forced to battle on numerous fronts in order to maintain their control of the planet.

The chaos on the planet was exacerbated by the presence of a number of mercenary and pirate companies, all vying for their piece of the action, as well as Clan Wolf, who decided to seek vengeance for the recent destruction of their mech production facilities on “The Rock”, courtesy of the Davion Heavy Guard.

The planet Tikonov is home to the Grand Union Iron Works, one of the most extensive VTOL, armor, and hovercraft manufacturing facilities in the galaxy. Consisting of factories, testing facilities, transport hubs, storage yards, and defense grids, Grand Union would be an invaluable prize. Possession and utilization of this facility is paramount if any invading force on the planet wishes to rule the air or have fast-moving armored units at its disposal.

Join us for a large Classic Battletech game in which five separate factions do battle for possession of the Grand Union Iron Works facility. In addition to securing the facility, each of the five factions will have its own secret mission objective, adding a further element of surprise and strategy to the overall battle.

Painted battlemechs, spectacular 3-D terrain, pencils, dice, clipboards, mission briefings, and Battletech record sheets will all be provided.

Game experience will be extremely helpful, but not entirely necessary. This game will utilize miniatures rules published in FASA’s Battletech Master Rules Revised Edition, as well as customized battle mechs created using WizKids’ Heavy Metal Pro software. Players ages 14+ only, please. Some knowledge of this rules system preferred.

Bekaa Valley Turkey Shoot * Check Your 6! Jet Age
E-Minis-2 * $ 2
Game Master: Andy Roy & Chris Nichols * 8 Players * Teen14
On June 9th 1982, Israel launched Operation Mole Cricket 19, the air campaign to suppress Syrian anti-aircraft defenses in the Bekaa Valley of Lebanon. These defenses needed to be eliminated in order for the Israeli Air Force to effectively support Israeli ground forces.

The catastrophic opening days of the Yom Kippur War in 1973 gave the Israeli Air Force reason to fear and respect the surface-to-air missiles (SAMs) and radar-guided anti-aircraft artillery (AAA) utilized by its Arab enemies. Israel was determined that its air force would never again suffer such losses.

Through precise intelligence and the use of electronic warfare and drones, the Israeli Air Force easily located the anti-aircraft defenses in the Bekaa Valley. The Israelis also provoked the Syrian Air Force into a monumental, one-sided air battle commonly referred to as “The Bekaa Valley Turkey Shoot.”

Join us for a large game of Check Your 6 Jet Age, in which players will represent veteran pilots of the Israeli Air Force attempting to sweep Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley of Syrian anti-aircraft defenses and interceptors in support of Israel’s invasion of Lebanon.

Opposing the Israelis shall be numerous MiGs of the Syrian Air Force, supported by SAM and AAA batteries whose command, control, and communications network is vital to Syria’s effective defense of the Bakaa valley.

Painted & detailed 1/285 scale aircraft, SAMs and AAA, a large professionally created satellite photo hex map, pencils, dice, clipboards, quick reference charts, and aircraft record sheets will all be provided. Game experience will be helpful, but not entirely necessary. The game’s rules and mechanics will be taught. We ask that players be age 14+ please. Beginners encouraged.

Republic of Rome (AH) * Avalon Hill Classic
F-Board-2 * $ 2
Game Master: Steve Bachman * 6 Players * Teen14
A historical continuation picking up when Sword of Rome leaves off, Republic of Rome is a game that captures the feel of intrigue and power politics in the Roman Senate during the more than 250 years of the Republic. Starting at the beginning of the 1st Punic War (264 BC), each player controls a faction, comprised of members from the leading Senatorial families, attempting to increase their strength and influence to the point where it dominates the government. Opposing these self-serving goals are the needs of the State and external threats against it, represented by the game itself. The players and their factions must cooperate as needed to properly prosecute the many wars against Rome's hostile neighbors, as well as see to the contentment of the populace. Failure to do so will bring about the fall of Rome and the end of the Republic, and a loss for all players. Will defending your principles keep you out of the loop of power? Will a lack of conscience bring about the fall of Rome? Can you walk that fine line to victory while keeping the other factions from doing the same? We will be using Avalon Hill edition with the Living Rules v2.16 available at the BoardGameGeek link below (titled RoRRulebookV216.pdf). Players should familiarize themselves with the rules beforehand. The scenario played - Early, Middle, or Late Republic - will be determined by the GM based on the experience levels and preferences of the players in the game. Like Diplomacy, Republic of Rome is often cutthroat and may include backstabs and double-crosses - players are asked to leave their personal relations at the door to avoid damaging any real world relationships. Some knowledge of this rules system preferred.

Moon Shot at Council of Five Nations adventure gaming conventionMoon Shot
F-Board-3 * $ 2

Puerto Rico
G-Board-9 * $ 2
Game Master: Ralph Mabb * 5 Players * E10
"In Puerto Rico players assume the roles of colonial governors on the island of Puerto Rico. The aim of the game is to amass victory points by shipping goods to Europe or by constructing buildings. Each player uses a separate small board with spaces for city buildings, plantations, and resources. Shared between the players are three ships, a trading house, and a supply of resources and doubloons. The resource cycle of the game is that players grow crops which they exchange for points or doubloons. Doubloons can then be used to buy buildings, which allow players to produce more crops or give them other abilities. Buildings and plantations do not work unless they are manned by colonists. During each round, players take turns selecting a role card from those on the table (such as ""Trader"" or ""Builder""). When a role is chosen, every player gets to take the action appropriate to that role. The player that selected the role also receives a small privilege for doing so - for example, choosing the ""Builder"" role allows all players to construct a building, but the player who chose the role may do so at a discount on that turn. Unused roles gain a doubloon bonus at the end of each turn, so the next player who chooses that role gets to keep any doubloon bonus associated with it. This encourages players to make use of all the roles throughout a typical course of a game. Puerto Rico uses a variable phase order mechanic, where a ""governor"" token is passed clockwise to the next player at the conclusion of a turn. The player with the token begins the round by choosing a role and taking the first action. Players earn victory points for owning buildings, for shipping goods, and for manned ""large buildings."" Each player's accumulated shipping chips are kept face down and come in denominations of one or five. This prevents other players from being able to determine the exact score of another player. Goods and doubloons are placed in clear view of other players and the totals of each can always be requested by a player. As the game enters its later stages, the unknown quantity of shipping tokens and its denominations require players to consider their options before choosing a role that can end the game." Beginners encouraged.

The Austro-Hungarian Navy vs the Italian Navy–Adriatic Sea, November, 1917 * When Dreadnaughts Ruled
G-Minis-1 * $ 2
Game Master: Bob Mulligan * 7 Players * E10
An Austro-Hungarian force of fast cruisers has raided the Otranto Barrage, covered by several capital ships. RPGA / D&D Expeditions

Adventure Module Descriptions

DDEX1-1 Defiance in Phlan

Learn to Play D&D 5E

Come learn to play the newest edition of Dungeons and Dragons! Make a character right here at the convention or use a pregenerated character. After creating or choosing a character, play as many one-hour mini-adventures in this slot as you like! Get just a taste of fifth edition or dive right in!

The Cult of the Dragon has come to Phlan, a lawless refuge on the Moonsea. Now, with no significant authority to stop the cult, other power groups in the Realms – the Harpers, Order of the Gauntlet, Emerald Enclave, Lords’ Alliance, and even the Zhentarim – must unite to stop the cult from fulfilling its dark purpose in the city. (These adventures are for legal characters of levels 1-2.)

DDEX1-2 Secrets of Sokol Keep

Decades have passed since Sokol Keep was reclaimed, and a small garrison placed there along with a beacon to help guide ships. Now, that beacon has gone dark, and the garrison has disappeared. In Phlan, rumors circulate that something ancient was discovered in the grounds beneath the keep, dating to before the clerics of Tyr built the small fortress. Uncover the secrets of Sokol Keep! (This adventure is for legal characters of levels 1-4.)

DDEX1-3 Shadow on the Moonsea

Life on the Moonsea isn’t easy. Bandits, pirates, and cruel lords dominate the land, threatening those who make an honest living there. Now, a new scourge is prowling the waters: A ghost ship has been striking small coastal villages, leaving its victims whispering about the “eye of the dracolich.” Join the adventure and learn the truth behind this threat! (This adventure is for legal characters of levels 1- 4.)

DDEX1-4 Dues for the Dead

For years, the Most Solemn Order of the Silent Shroud has tended the dead at Valinghen graveyard, providing them a peaceful eternal rest. Now, that rest has been disturbed by a necromancer seeking out a key to re-activate the Pool of Radiance. (This adventure is for legal characters of levels 1-4.)

DDEX1-5 The Courting of Fire

An exiled cultist and his kobold minions are spotted searching long-forgotten ruins in the Dragonspire Mountains. Rumors say he looks for a precious gift to give to a fearsome dragon that dwells there. What he hopes to attain with his gift is unknown, but can’t be good for the citizens of Phlan. (This adventure is for legal characters of levels 1-4.)

DDEX1-6 The Scroll Thief

Scholars Square is a relatively quiet corner of Phlan, but a series of odd thefts have the headmasters of various schools in the area concerned. The headmasters’ pleas for help have gone unanswered by the Black Fist, and the Lord Sage of Phlan decides to reach out to you and your kind to bring those responsible to justice. (This adventure is for legal characters of levels 1-4.)

Vault of the Dracolich

Deep in the forest of Cormanthor lies the hoard of the dracolich Dretchroyaster, the prize of which is a diamond staff rumored to unlock the secrets of an ancient elven kingdom. The sage Imani is seeking dozens of adventurers to launch an all-out assault on the undead dragon's lair. The dracolich is a powerful foe - too great for even several parties to conquer - so it's going to take all of the heroes' courage, cunning, and speed to survive the dracolich's deadly vault.

Vault of the Dracolich is a multi-table “interactive adventure” where events that take place at one table may influence the other tables. Adventurers work together in teams to complete a larger objective. (This adventure is for legal 4th level characters – pre-generated characters will be provided as well. This is a two-slot adventure. Players must sign up for both slots to participate.)
