Kids Games at Council of Five Nations

Games for the Kids

Last Update:  Saturday, Sept 15th, 2012

Many of us got started in adventure gaming before we were old enough to drive, and we want Council of Five Nations to welcome families and kids. But we also know that the thematic content or complexity of some games makes them unsuitable for young players. To allow attendees and parents to make an informed decision on participation in an event, all events have been assigned one of the following Maturity Ratings:
•    Child rating is for children age 6 - 9 with adult supervision
•    E10+ rating is for players 10 and up in age (This is the default rating)
•    Teen rating is for players 14 and up in age
•    Mature rating is for players 18 and up in age.

We have also identified some games as particularly geared to Kids.  You will see the “Kids” flag in the event description header, and outlined in the special event track below.  We have tried to distribute the events so that our younger attendees will have something to do in most time slots across the entire Council weekend.

Mystic Wood and Settlers Jr * Board Games for Kids
D-Board-8 * $ 2
Game Master: Jessica Kent * 4 Players * Kids * Child
Mystic Wood: Players are knights seeking to perform a particular quest (varies with each knight) in order to win the game. Exploration and adventure are created by the game board being made up of randomly placed tiles which are uncovered as the knights reach them. Tiles can be fixed locations or glades where a randomly chosen role card can reveal a spell or a denizen. Denizens act in different ways, depending upon its nature or the throw of a die. Some help the knights, others hinder. Players compete against each other, but can also work together to defeat a denizen. The first knight to complete his or her quest and exit the Mystic Wood wins the game.

Catan Jr: Explore the seas! Catan: Junior introduces a modified playing style of the classic Settlers of Catan, giving players as young as five a perfect introduction to the Catan series of games.

Catan: Junior takes place on a ring of islands where 2 to 4 players build hideouts and encounter the mysterious Spooky Island, where the Ghost Captain lives. Each island generates a specific resource: wood, goats, molasses or swords, and players can acquire gold. Each player starts with two pirate hideouts on different islands, and they can use the resources they acquire to build ships, hideouts or get help from Coco the Parrot. By building ships, they can expand their network; the more hideouts they build, the more resources they may receive. Just watch out for the dreaded Ghost Captain! Be the first player to control seven pirate hideouts, and you win! Beginners encouraged.

Special note about Pathfinder RPG games for the Kids:

For kids around 6-12 years old, we will be offering a number of great Pathfinder introductory events. Friday evening kids will get to be a little crazy with the short module "We Be Goblins!" Saturday morning and afternoon, we will be running the 4 Pathfinder Kid's Track encounters, which were a huge hit at GenCon. After completing all 4 encounters each kid will receive a Pathfinder Diploma and can officially start their careers as Pathfinders. Sunday morning and afternoon, new Pathfinders will get a chance to show what they're made of, as they are sent on their first official Society missions, with the intro scenarios "In Service to Lore" and "To Delve the Dungeon Deep".
