Special Event Track

Science Fiction Games

Science Fiction is a very popular gaming genre.  If you want to play nothing but science fiction offerings all weekend, we’ve got you covered.

All Weekend

The Council Cup - Star Fleet Battles Tournament * Star Fleet Battles
SFB * $ 5
Game Master: John Rigley * 32 Players * Teen14
Star Fleet Battles is an intricate game of ship-to-ship combat in the classic Star Trek universe (the one Kirk explored). Several other races have been added for variety. Tournament battles are like tense chess matches, with each player trying to bring his ship’s strengths to bear. Last year’s tournament was once again the largest in the whole country, and we expect great attendance again this year.

To make it easier for you to try the game if you're interested, look in your registration packet for a coupon to play the first game free. If you'd like to continue in the tournament, you can pay to enter. But if you'd just like to learn a new game, it's on us.

SFB stars right at 9am on Friday when the doors open. Fight patrol battles all weekend, until we start the finals on Saturday evening at 7pm. Semi-finals and Finals will be Sunday.

You can change your ship mid-tournament, but you will need to pay a new $5 to re-enter.

NEW FOR 2014 - Anyone who comes in try SFB for the first time, or comes in to shake off years of rust, can walk away with a free item from our “Take One Leave One” used SFB game pile. Beginners encouraged.

B-Board-4 * $ 2
Game Master: James Parks * 6 Players * E10
"Get a ship. Get a crew. Keep flying. This boardgame perfectly captures the spirit of the show as you work jobs, try to stay on the right side of the law, and keep your transport running. If we have enough peoople, or people who've played before, we may bust out the Pirates and Bounty Hunters expansion." Beginners encouraged.

Federation Commander (Miniatures) * Federation Commander
B-Minis-1 * $ 2
Game Master: Thomas A. Compter * 6 Players * E10
"Arm the Photons! Klingon contact bearing one one two mark seven! You have the conn. Will you measure up to the famous commanders you learned about in the Academy? Now is your chance to find out. Federation Commander is the fast moving Miniatures game of starship combat in the Star Fleet Universe. Much effort has gone into streamlining the game - there are 8 impulses rather than 32. One die roll allocates up to 10 points of damage, rather than 2 dice per damage point that strikes the ship. Color coded charts and ship cards reduce the mental overhead of remembering what goes where. Gone is the tax form of energy allocation, replaced by a free flowing dynamic ""on the fly"" power allocation system. Maneuver has had countless special cases removed and streamlined. " Beginners encouraged.

Die Another Day * Squadron Strike
B-Minis-3 * $ 2
Game Master: Ken Burnside * 6 Players * E10
Captain Jameston Church, of the League Space Vessel Enterprise didn't set out to be a hero. He and Commander Jeffries of the Intrepid had been garrisoning the Kronos star system, and waiting for their survey pickets to return from Cochrane.

Protocol says to send destroyers back to report that something might have gone missing, and to proceed forward, ready for conflict or diplomacy.

Much to his dismay, he found a massed fleet of Karthians. Diplomacy wouldn't happen in this life. If what the xeno team said about the Karthian's belief system was true, it was unlikely to happen in the next thousand, either. Based on how the Karthians were moving, they weren't aware of the entry wormhole to this system that the League had found. Retreating would reveal a way back into the League's main defensive positions.

He ordered the Intrepid to form up. While the odds were long, he, and Commander Jeffries needed to die another day. Beginners encouraged.

Friday Night  7:00-11:00+ PM  (Slot C)

Moon Shot
C-Board-2 * $ 2
Game Master: David Bostwick * 6 Players * E10
Largely an artifact of the Cold War, the Great Space Race started with the launch of Sputnik in 1957 and ended with the first steps of human beings on the moon in 1969. The world was captivated by the exploration of space and the grand adventure that a few humans had embarked on. The Moon Shot became the defining event of a generation.

The game Moon Shot captures the essence of the most dramatic adventure of the 20th Century. Players will manage the efforts of their space agency to develop the technologies and knowledge necessary to make the great voyage to the moon possible. The objective is to achieve the greatest stature of all competing space agencies. Players will earn stature by planning and successfully completing missions, with greater stature awarded to those who are first to achieve each milestone.

This is a playtest of a game being developed by James DuMond. James has been a gamer since his high school days in the mid '80s playing a variety of RPGs, Boardgames and Miniature Wargames. James is designing Moon Shot to create a streamlined game about the American vs Soviet space race, but expanded to a multiplayer format by the addition of anachronistic space agencies while remaining as historical as possible. The game also aims to be subtlety educational by making players more aware of the historical milestones that were achieved in the early days of space exploration. James' ambition for Moonshot is to get it published and then sold at the Smithsonian Air and Space museum and the JFK Presidential Library so it is accessible to the public at-large. Beginners encouraged.

Assault on Grand Union Iron Works * Classic Battletech
D-Minis-1 * $ 2
Game Master: Andy Roy & Chris Nichols * 10 Players * Teen14
Following the Capellan Confederation’s invasion of Tikonov, the Federated Commonwealth found its forces on the planet in disarray. FedCom was blindsided by the Cappellan’s betrayal, and were forced to battle on numerous fronts in order to maintain their control of the planet.

The chaos on the planet was exacerbated by the presence of a number of mercenary and pirate companies, all vying for their piece of the action, as well as Clan Wolf, who decided to seek vengeance for the recent destruction of their mech production facilities on “The Rock”, courtesy of the Davion Heavy Guard.

The planet Tikonov is home to the Grand Union Iron Works, one of the most extensive VTOL, armor, and hovercraft manufacturing facilities in the galaxy. Consisting of factories, testing facilities, transport hubs, storage yards, and defense grids, Grand Union would be an invaluable prize. Possession and utilization of this facility is paramount if any invading force on the planet wishes to rule the air or have fast-moving armored units at its disposal.

Join us for a large Classic Battletech game in which five separate factions do battle for possession of the Grand Union Iron Works facility. In addition to securing the facility, each of the five factions will have its own secret mission objective, adding a further element of surprise and strategy to the overall battle.

Painted battlemechs, spectacular 3-D terrain, pencils, dice, clipboards, mission briefings, and Battletech record sheets will all be provided.

Game experience will be extremely helpful, but not entirely necessary. This game will utilize miniatures rules published in FASA’s Battletech Master Rules Revised Edition, as well as customized battle mechs created using WizKids’ Heavy Metal Pro software. Players ages 14+ only, please. Some knowledge of this rules system preferred.
