Agricola - Adoptive Parents

10 hours 34 min ago
According to the (unofficial) compendium in the files section, the adoptive parents "interact" with Wet nurse, Lover, Village Beauty and Mother of twins.

I think they should not interact as the new family member is not born from the adoptive parents. Could we have an official ruling here, please?

10 hours 56 min ago
I finally got in touch with the U.S. representatives of Devir U.S.A. Those living in the U.S.A. (and apparently other 15 countries of Latin America and the Caribbean) interested in getting a copy of the game can contact Katy Hewitson at the following e-mail address:

Thank you for your interest in this design… and Enjoy 2 de Mayo!

Power Grid - Step 2 didn't happen!

10 hours 59 min ago
We had our first game of Power Grid last night, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all. The strange thing was though, step 2 and step 3 happened pretty much simultaneously, meaning that step 2 didn't happen. I'll try to explain:

It was a 3-player game, using the Germany map, and we got to the stage where we had built 5-6 cities each. One of us then purchased a 7th city (phase 4), triggering the beginning of step 2. However, in phase 5, the step 3 card appeared, meaning that we moved straight into step 3, bypassing step 2 completely.

I'm pretty sure that we got the rules right, so my question is - is this is common occurence or were we just playing badly? The game took about 2.5 hours, which for a first attempt didn't seem too bad.

The only thing I can think was that we were buying and replacing too many plants (there were no rounds when no plants were purchased), and not getting enough cities. No-one was hoarding cash - in fact it seemed quite scarce!

The other thing we noticed was that shortage of resources didn't seem to be too much of an issue - is this more prominent with more players?

All ideas / help / constructive criticism gratefully received!!

Agricola - Where's the cards?

11 hours 22 min ago
The rules state that there are 169 occupation cards and 139 minor improvements total in the 3 decks. That is a total of 308 cards + the 24 Z cards for a grand total of 332. Well the highest numbered card in the sets is 342. That left 10 missing cards.I have looked through the decks and can find no sign of cards 1 - 10. What are they? and where are they?

Curious minds need to know.

Napoleon's Triumph - Probing with little sacrifice

11 hours 32 min ago
Sorry if this has been asked before or seems obvious:

Do I overlook some rule, when I probe enemy corps by the following method. Imagine two corps in adjacent locales.
I:"Attack threat on this wide approach between us"
Enemy:"I defend with entire corps from reserve"
I:"Not a feint"
Enemy:"Defense leading are two 3 strenght Inf"

Here I notice my corps will be shattered should I attack.
So I say:"Attack command is independent and excecuted by this single unit, that I hereby detach from the corps (this is a 1 strenght inf). Attack leading units are zero."

Now what happens is, that I only get one single casualty, because I only had one and the rest stays in place, correct?

Alternative I could have taken a 2 strenght Inf and let it lead the attack. This would have resulted in 2 losses for me, but also a loss for him. Everything without harming my corps' coherence.

Is all of the above in agreement with the rules? So I can probe the enemy's strength with this little sacrifice?

Warrior Heroes: Armies & Adventures - Which way to go please?

11 hours 39 min ago

So my quest continues and I'd like a suggestion on which way my hero should go... I've got two encounters prepared for him to face. One is yer old handy dandy bar brawl... why... don't need a reason... they just happen.

The other is a bug hunt. Big, nasty, grotty bugs with poor manners and a smell that only a roach could love.

So tell me which you think it should be...

a)Bar Brawl
b)Bug Hunt

I'll wait for a few days before proceeding.

Risk 2210 A.D. - Io 2210 A.D. map

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 02:53

I just finished my Io map for Risk 2210 and, since I am not ready to compile it and put it in the files section, I thought I would reveal it here. The basic idea behind the map is that humans terraformed Io but something eventually went wrong and the surface became very volcanic. As a result, there are no water colonies. Instead there are lava colonies. Additionally, this dangerous territory was given to people who have been marginalized previously (screwed coming in, screw coming out), which is why many of the territory names are those of minority groups and cultural oddities, with a few pop culture references thrown in.

The only change in rules are that naval commanders cost an extra energy to buy, in order to outfit them for lava. Additionally, the basic shape of the map is taken from Risk Napoleon Edition, so some of the tactics for that game might work, even if the map is very much modified. I'll post the cards for this map eventually but it might be a few weeks.

Container - Loans cannot be taken during an auction???

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 02:53
In the rulebook, it states that loans can be taken out at any time. It's clear that they can only be repaid during one's turn, but it says nothing (unless I'm missing it) about any restriction to taking one.

However, this geek file of a rules summary states that:
Loans can be issued at any time except during an auction.
http://files.boardgamegeek.com/geekfile_view.php?fileid=3550...

I heard this from the player who taught me the game as well. Where is this coming from? Was there some kind of errata put out, or am I missing something?

A Touch of Evil, The Supernatural Game - FFP Customer Service contact for getting some cards replaced?

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 02:25
I just picked this game up at Gen Con and was preparing for my first game tomorrow night when I noticed several of the cards had what might be printing mishaps on the common faces. See photo:

As FFP rarely updates their site and often post here, I was hoping that I could get some info on how to get these replaced here on BGG. This wouldn't be such a big deal but the errors are on the common faces of the cards which makes them hard to play with.

Thanks in advance for any help.

ALSO - the drifter in Touch of Evil seems to be a distant relative of the drifter in the Last Night on Earth game. Funny stuff FFP! You guys rock!

Field Commander: Rommel - Is Fortress Tobruk considered an Allied Resupply Placement Area?

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 01:49
As I'm looking over the possibilities for Allied orders in the Tobruk region in the N. Africa 1941 scenario, I see a 1- roll yields a "Retreat" order, which means the units are to head toward the nearest Allied resupply placement area not held by the Axis. Cairo and Alexandria are listed as the places to roll for resupply placement; however, Fortress Tobruk also gets resupply units placed in it on a certain resupply die roll, so I am wondering if units in Tobruk region would retreat toward Cairo/Alexandria or retreat into Fortress Tobruk if it was held by the Allies? Both seem reasonable to me, so it's not obvious to me which is the intent of the design.

Has anyone encountered this situation before?

Thanks for any light that can be shed.

Iron Tide:Panzers in the Ardennes - Publisher price increase announced

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 01:38
If you are sitting on the fence deciding whether or not to buy Iron Tide, your chance at finding a discounted game are slipping away. The present stock of the suppliers will be the last of the cheaper units. The price increase will be to the tune of $10 higher if you wait, so look for the deals, but act quickly before they are all gone at this price.

Dread Pirate: Buccaneer's Revenge - DP vs DP-BR?

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 01:30
It's not clear, from looking at the two threads and the reviews, what is the same or different between the original Dread Pirate and DP, Buc's revenge.

Can someone fill me in on that?

Is BR the same as the original, with more stuff added?

Is it lighter weight in terms of components?

I see that BR does not come in the 'treasure chest,' but what else is different?

Someone on the other thread spoke of "combining the two games," which suggests that they may be very different.

I appreciate any help in clarifying this.

Agricola - Food requirements for permanent occupations in solo series games

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 01:06
When playing the solo series and carrying over permanent occupations, I know the first permanent occupation kept (from Game 1 to Game 2) is free, and the second and any subsequent occupations from the Occupation Action Space cost one food each. However, in the event you are moving from Game 2 to Game 3 (or beyond), do you need to pay 1 Food for the 2nd, 3rd, etc. permanent occupations, or is it only when you play a Family Member to the Occupation Action Space?

If you are supposed to pay a food for each permanent occupation above the first, what do you do if you do not score highly enough in the preceding game to start the subsequent game with any bonus food?

Napoleon's Triumph - Can someone going to Dragon Con '08 teach me this game?

Thu, 08/21/2008 - 00:05
I have owned this game for like a year now, and have read the rules multiple times, and have tried to muddle through some turns with a friend, but something about this game just totally confounds me. I play TONS of game, from heavy wargames to euros, and I have never had any trouble understanding a game after just a few minutes of play. with NT though, I just have no idea what is going on, I can barely grasp the mechanics, and the strategy based on those mechanics totally eludes me.

If anyone going to Dragon Con this year who really understands the ins and outs of this game would be willing to run through a teaching game with me I would be eternally grateful. Reply here or in geekmail. I really want to understand this game!

Thanks.

Agricola - Thoughts after first 2 player game

Wed, 08/20/2008 - 23:38
So I have played the solitaire flash game a couple times in preparation for when I finally received the game, but today was my first time playing with someone else. I taught the game to a neighbor, Rob, and we played. Here are a few of my thoughts.

1- We flipped a tile to determine the starting player, and I didn't get it. I never took the start player/minor improvement action (getting my minor improvements elsewhere), and it came back to cost me the game. My neighbor, Rob, realizing late in the game that he could keep me from getting the "family growth without a room" action. Well, he ended up with a full 5 family members while I ended up with only 3. I should have done something different.

2- Not entirely knowing what he was doing, Rob never plowed a field or planted anything. It cost him a lot of points, but he made up for them by having a bigger family than I had.

3- It is a lot easier to feed a family in the multiplayer game than it was in the solitaire game. The 2 food per family member is much easier than 3 per member, especially since you start the solitaire game without any food.

4- We only purchased 3 major improvements in our game. Is that normal? Did we miss the value of them?

5- The occupation and minor improvement cards really add a lot to the game and make for a lot of fun. I wonder if it would be easier to teach a new player if we started out with fewer cards, say 4 occupation and 4 minor improvement, and added 3 more of each later in the game? It would be easier to concentrate on a smaller hand as a beginner.

6- It can be a little bit confusing at harvest time to keep everything straight. "Wait, did we already replenish the actions? Did I breed my animals already?"

7- It took us about 2 hours to teach and play. But I definitely think the 1/2 hour per player could be doable after a few more times.

We had a fun time and can't wait to play again. I think it will only be more fun with more players. Great stuff!

Tide of Iron - TOI coming to Xbox Live..

Wed, 08/20/2008 - 23:34
Wow. I never saw this coming. It looks like TOI is on its way to Xbox Live. Also, they are putting out Wings of War: Famous Aces. It seems Fantasy Flight has partnered with MS and Sony to create electronic versions of some of their board and card games, with the previously mentioned two games coming out first. I'm psyched for this. TOI is very fiddly for me, but having the computer take care of a lot of the house keeping might be a great thing.

Here's the story

Ticket to Ride - Question about Scoring

Wed, 08/20/2008 - 23:33
Okay, I'm most likely reading into it too much, but we're a little confused on how scoring works. How is your score calculated? Is it based solely on the number of cars you use to link your two cities? Or is based on the number that appears on the bottom of your ticket?

I know, it's probably going to be considered the most basic, easy-to-grasp-concept, but somehow we've gotten ourselves to the point where nothing makes sense anymore.

Up is down, black is white, in is out, opposite day is opposite... Jane! Stop this crazy thing!

Thanks.
