Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

()

For the people playing in my Sunday DnD game use the following guidelines to construct your character:

For attributes, we will be using the point-method. All attributes begin at 8. The cost to raise is:

1 per point up to 14
2 per point for 15 and 16
3 per point for 17 and 18

For example, an attribute of 17 costs 13 points (6 for raising 8 to 14, 2 each for 15 and 16, and 3 for 17).

A character has 30 points to purchase attributes with.

After purchase, apply racial modifiers, if any.

We will be playing in the Forgotten Realms and I will be treating the material in the FR Campaign Book, Magic of Faerun, and Faiths and Pantheons as canon; spells and domains added are available and only the prestige classes in these books are available for PCs.

Available classes: All

Available Races: Human, Half Elf, Half Orc, Gnomes, Dwarves, Halflings, and Elves. There are sub-races available for Gnomes, Halflings, Dwarves, and Elves in the Campaign book; if you don't have it, let me know what you are interested in and I will send you the stats or post them.

Alignments: Any good or neutral. As a side note, I do pay attention to your alignment and it has happened that paladins and clerics have had to do atonement for alignment breaches.

Rules: We will be using the classes, skills, and feats as revised in the PHB 3.5 with the additional material in the FR Campaign Book. Combat and resolution will follow 3.5.

Location: Unless someone has a specific request, we will begin play (and likely remain in for awhile) the Silver Marches.

Post your characters or let me know what you're thinking. I encourage everyone to intertwine your backgrounds if possible, as this makes starting make more sense. I'd like players to write a background and send it to me; this is optional but gives me a better idea of what you'd like to see and come up with any hooks, plots, etc.

Starting Equipment: Pick a starting package from the PHB. Players will also start with a legacy item(s), depending on class and background; you have the option to start with 300 gp instead.

I think that is it. Post any questions or comments. Thanks!

Mike

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

Probably 7pm, if everyone is cool with that. Haven't heard from Nate about Saturdays, although he usually could make Exalted, if a little later.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

mabye thunder twin is not a good idea i want to see mike do gymnastics!

what time are we meeting saturday?

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

There we go, a little magic and you too can work a computer!

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

We have 1 Ranger, 1 Cleric, 1 Paladin, and now 1 Wizard. Jason told me today that he decidied to play a paladin, so unless he changes his mind we are okay. Seems we could use a rogue though. I'll post my background some time before Saturday.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

Just background would be fine.

It is a neat idea, if two players are thinking of being dwarves; I have grown fond of backgrounds that tie PCs together without alot of gymnastics on my part Eye-wink

Wizards can be useful; we actually are fighter-shy, unless Jason decides on a paladin. Or Nate, I haven't heard what he is favoring. Of course, fighter npcs are easier to run than npcs of other classes.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

Hehe. I was going to do this with Jason, but I "accidentally" talked myself into a sun elf mage, as we dont have a wizard yet. Mike, do you want the whole character posted here or just background?

BTW, sorry for the non-posting of late, my computer has crashed twice and I cant get my other account back logged in.

Bill

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

The feat is one of the cooler background ones and relates to the game world's history. Of course, you would have to be related to Jason

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

I had though about making the Cleric a dwarf. I don't know anything about the feat you mentioned but we can talk more about it when we make characters.

mike to get the legacy or bonus items you need to take the starting equipment package from the phb?

No the starting equipment in the PHB is separate, although you should use common-sense: if your bonus item is a suit of armor, or a weapon, it replaces the armor or weapon in the PHB package. If you want to use a different kind of weapon (i.e., the package has sword and you want to use a mace or spear), that is cool.

The bonus items are based on Classes, Regions and Race, as listed in the FR book.

how hard would it be for you to come up with varient paladin rules that drop the mount? im looking at a dwarf and i think the mount rules suck anyway.

Hmmm, I would be more likely to go with the mount rules for 3.0; they did some wacky things to the 3.5 mount rules. I'm not sure I'd compensate for not using the mount, although I might consider a feat (like Divine Power, or some such) from the Cleric/Paladin sourcebook as replacement.

also would you allow any of the weapons from the warriors book? im thinking of useing a maul.

I would be more likely to use it if it is in the Arms and Equipment Guide. It is an actual weapon, so I tend to have less problem with it than, say, a mercury-filled sword Shocked

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

what race were you going to play mark? i was thinking of taking thunder twin which is a dwarven feat and if your playing a dwrf might be something your into.
it looks like this saturday and the next saturday are open to start the game.
nate bill told me sunday nights were open for him too. if it helps it would be every other week. or we can meet sturday and figure out a schedual. are saturdays open for you?

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

in september i start a noon to 9 job monday through friday. i can schedual around anything for a saturday or sunday slot.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

Satruday is good for me. I work until 5 but can be there antyime after that. I'd like to quickly look over the spells and prestige classes in the three FR books you mentioned when we meet to make characters. But more than likely I'll still play a single-classed Cleric regardless of the new material.

As far as work is concerned, my current work schedule is Tuesday & Thursday-Sunday, with Monday and Wednesday off. I'm free anytime on my days off, and on workdays after 5 if that helps with scheduling.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

It looks like Saturday the 24th is clear; do you guys want to try and meet at the Studio then and start? If so, please post here that you are available then. I'll send an e-mail as well when I get home.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

My hope was Sunday afternoons, using space over at Zombie Planet on Central, or perhaps the Studio. At the moment, we're looking at Sunday nights because of Mark Fendly's work schedule and that would put us at the Studio.

I would be amenable to other times or days, if people can work that out. Mark Russman has pretty much tied Saturday nights down with Starfleet and his DnD game (which I know a bunch of you are doing 1 or both of), but if that is the best time I am willing to work around his days if possible. Saturday afternoon is OK with me, but I know Nate used to work at that time.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

When sundays will you be playing.I'm interested but have to pick up my kids sunday evenings... noon till 6 or 7 would be ebst for me. evenings are out for me. and where, thats much less important but if i have to travell that might factor into me leaving early.

Nanci's Character

Nanci (my wife, for those who don't know her Eye-wink ) will be playing a Rock Gnome Ranger from the High Forest (or perhaps from the Silver Marches if she finds an appropriate village). Alignment is NG.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

congrats !!!

i am already trying to schedual with bill to make our characters. if you need i could loan my book to you to create your character before the first session.

Legacy items are the bonus items in the FR book.

Neither Drow or Duergar are appropriate (unless everyone wants to run an Underdark campaign).

No one should have to purchase anything new, I hope. There should be various books floating around. The PDF WoTC had of the changes should take care of most everything.

Level-gainage in 3rd edition generally is pretty quick. How far people get will depend on how much interest there is to keep going. On a personal note, my wife and I are expecting our first child in February, so that might be the short-term end. I should think we could get to 7th level or so by then, perhaps as far as 10th. At that point my life will likely get a bit more complicated, so we'll have to play it by ear.

Re: Sunday DnD game Character Guidelines

I only have the core rulebooks for 3.0 but I'll read some of the .pdf files on the WotC website to get up to speed on what has changed. Don't really have the money or the desire to purchase anything new at this point.

Mike, where do you envision the game going to level wise? This might have some impact on what characters people will want to play, or how they plan their character progression.

My first class choice would be Cleric, but depending on the scope of the game I might be inclined to play something else if the game were to eventually reach the point where we could have a significant amount of levels in a second class or a prestige class.

im very open as to what i might play. what is everyone else thinking?
