Game Universe Tidbits

()

Mike, I have a request.

Can you please share with us here some "GM Suggestions" or "things you ought to know about the game world".

For example, my knowledge of history is not as good as yours and Jason's. I would not have known that all nobles in England and Scotland speak French if it hadn't come up in discussion at our organizational meeting. This is a good game universe tidbit to know.

Are there others you can think of? Things our characters would know about Scottish history, or the current political situation? Things about Loch Leglean tribunal?

Are there any suggestions for us, from the GM, as we create our characters?

For example, you have already said there is a lot of Faerie activity in this area. I am assuming that means a little bit of Faerie Lore would be a good thing, and that characters native to this area might be expected to have a point or three from living here their whole lives.

Please share other tidbits as they occur to you.

Re: Game Universe Tidbits

Mark,

Thank you for sharing that tidbit. That is exactly the kind of thing that adds extra flavor to the game (and is good for adventure hooks too!).

Similarly, what Mike posted about Pralix forming House Ex Miscellanea is already worked into my character.

When I meet other magi in the tribunal, and they ask me what brought me to Scotland, my answer will be something like:

"I walk in the footsteps of Pralix. I too have forsaken the ways of Tytalus and have found welcome in House Ex Miscellanea. I am here in Scotland to search for artifacts and stories from the time of Pralix. Do you have any unique Intelligo magics that could aid me, or perhaps books of Lore from those times? I am happy to discuss terms of trade with you."

The area we are in is renown for its jewelry and writings. Excavations have found the ingredients to make the golden ink that was so cherished at the time...the base for which comes from the Mediterranean.... I smell a hook for my character..

Things you should know

Some things you should know:

The current King of Scotland is Alexander, 1st of his name. His reign began in 1107. He has been following a policy on infeudating Scotland; to this end he has begun to invite Normans from England to help settle and rule the lowlands, mainly in the south and east coast. This process will continue for another 50+ years.

The King of Man and the Isles (located off the west coast....not too far from the covenhant) is Olaf, 1st of his name. He has reigned since 1113. They are Norse.

The Earl of Orkney is Hakon; this is another Norse colony.

The King of England and Duke of Normandy is Henry I. He is the 3rd son of William the Illlegitimate, who conquered England in 1066. Although having over 20 acknowledged illegitimate children, his only son dies in 1120, leaving the kingdom heirless.

Languages:
Scots (Scots Gaelic) is the language used by most of the peasantry and nobility.

Irish is spoken on the west coast.

Norse is spoken on the Isles and in the north.

Other languages, such as French or English, are spoken depending on the locale. Norman nobility speak French almost exclusively. Latin might be spoken in Monasteries and Abbeys.

Religion:
Most of Scotland follows the Scottish Rite; the Church in Scotland does not acknowledge the primacy of Rome at this time. This is changing slowly, as the Romish rite follows Norman colonization. The dominion of the Scottish Church does not interfere with spell casting, but does have other effects.

Hermetic:
The Loch Leglean Tribunal is named for the location of Pralix's winter camp in her war against Damhan-allaidh. Given the task of hunting this rogue wizard down, she organized and trained the native hedge magicians of England and Scotland. This culminated in Damhan-allaidh's defeat and Pralix's establishment of the Ordo Miscellanea. The Ordo was eventually absorbed into the Order of Hermes, becoming House Ex Miscellanea, a refuge for the weak or esoteric.

There have since been sightings of Damhan-allaidh, but this would make him several hundred years old.
