Ultimately, the purpose of points is to encourage participation. A variety of actions will give users points. Some people are competitive and will contribute to the site just to see their name rise up the rankings.
I'm hoping at some point to recognize point earners in some fashion. The site has seen a real slow down in activity as people have stopped visiting due to problems. Hopefully people will use the new features and breath some life back into the site.
